Table of contents

A table of contents gives users an overview of the document's contents and organization. It also allows readers to go directly to a specific section of an online document. This enables readers to jump to content relevant to them, or quickly re-find information.

Example

Styles

Make use of styles in Microsoft Word.

Styles allow you to ‘tag’ text as different types, such as what is a heading, what is body text, what is a list. By tagging content and categorising it, you can then consistently format those types of text. This also allows screen readers to interpret the different styles.
