The reference list is the prime vehicle for documenting your sources (13.111). The full details of a work are listed in the reference list. Reference lists can also be titled “References” or “Works Cited”. Reference lists are arranged alphabetically except that multiple sources by the same author are arranged chronologically (in ascending order from oldest to newest) (13.112). Chicago now recommends repeating the author's name for successive works by the same author rather than using a 3-em dash (13.113).
If the author, editor, or translator for the work is unknown, the reference list entry should normally begin with the title (13.81).
Two or more works by the same author in the same year must be differentiated by the addition of a, b, c etc. (13.114).
