Preprints are versions of scholarly papers that have not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a journal (or other format). The work in a preprint is usually close to being complete (as opposed to other documents such as working papers which can be more preliminary). An advantage of preprints is that work can be communicated rapidly without the time delays associated with traditional publishing.
