Definition

A report or policy submission based on original research undertaken on a systematic basis to increase the stock of knowledge in the areas of government and non-government policy and practice, including social, economic, health or environmental research impacting public interest, communities and business.

The report or policy submission must have been commissioned or solicited by a discipline recognised body, enterprise or organisation , but does not fit the other research report categories, e.g. independent think tanks, independent networks of experts that address significant societal issues or professional networks.

Original research that addresses existing social or industry issues in new ways and/or extends the boundaries of knowledge and/or existing concepts, methodologies, approaches, practices or techniques.

Innovative research exhibiting a high degree of originality, which may:

  • yield new approaches
  • involve interdisciplinary or usually unrelated practices
  • challenge disciplinary conventions
  • produce new knowledge.

Works to include:

  • A research report or review undertaken for an organisation not covered by the above sub-categories, including papers and education materials, such as commissioned policy papers, annual reports, training manuals or clinical practice guidelines.
Non-commissioned policy papers, annual reports, training manuals or clinical practice guidelines may be eligible via the Creative Work - Textual or Creative Work - Other categories if there is sufficient evidence as a research-based output rather than teaching/reference material.

Note:

  • All works in this category must be available in the public domain.
  • Embargoed works where the metadata only can be available publicly via UQ eSpace and downstream systems should be submitted as a Research Report - Other or Citation Only report type. This type of report may not meet the criteria for future research assessment reviews.

Research Report - Other or Citation Only

Definition

A report published at the conclusion of a research project.  The project may be part of a body of internal UQ research or collaboration with research external to the institution, or a combination of both.  This type of research report has not been commissioned or solicited by an external body (see the definitions for commissioned research reports in this guide), and does not meet the criteria for a non-traditional research output or ERA eligibility.

This work type is intended for reports that:

  • are not commissioned by an external body, and
    • are produced internally by UQ authors, or
    • are produced externally and include UQ authors, and
    • may be available open access (metadata and full text), or
    • may or may not be subject to embargo or commercial or cultural sensitivities restriction, but
    • if embargoed, the metadata only can be made publicly available.

Caveat:

Commissioned works that contain embargoed cultural, commercial or legally sensitive material, where the metadata can be available publicly via UQ eSpace and downstream systems, should be submitted as a Research Report - Other or Citation Only report type. This type of report is not eligible for ERA due to unavailability of the report for ERA peer review.

Works to include:

  • Non-commissioned internal UQ-published research reports, or
  • Non-commissioned externally-published research reports, or
  • Reports with an embargo on the report itself, but public access to the metadata about the report via UQ eSpace is permissible.

Evidence type:

  • There is no requirement to provide evidence for this type of report, but you may upload a PDF copy or provide a link to the report if available
  • If the work is to be made available open access in UQ eSpace, please provide a copy of the report

Note:

  • UQ eSpace accepts restricted-access reports that contain culturally or commercially sensitive information provided that:
    • descriptive metadata for the report can be available publicly via UQ eSpace and other downstream systems, e.g. UQ Researchers or the Individual Activity Profile (IAP)
    • a title page or other evidence can be uploaded (may be restricted from public view)
  • Fully restricted or embargoed works (where both the metadata and the report content must not be made publicly available or available to peer reviewers) should not be uploaded to UQ eSpace.
  • For advice on providing a cultural advisory or sensitivity statement please contact UQ eSpace
