Good research data management and Indigenous data governance requires planning and decision making around how materials and data will be stored, deposited, or archived. This includes how and under what conditions people can access any of that data. Research data must be managed and archived well, and in accordance with the requirements of Indigenous peoples. The AIATSIS code and Guide (PDF, 3.92 MB) has some useful guidance.
Selecting an appropriate storage solution for Indigenous research data should include consultation with relevant custodians to determine the best options. It should be capable of ensuring sensitive and confidential information is protected, backed up and secure. Storage for the data should also be able to control who has access to any data, and that Indigenous people's rights to their data are facilitated.
Researchers should also determine what the access rights to the data will be in the short term, and long-term for any archival data or published datasets, in consultation with Indigenous communities, participants, ethics committees, or custodians of data and traditional knowledge.
