Referencing software

EndNote is a tool for gathering and storing all your references. You can use it to insert the references into a bibliography and automate the referencing style.

Suggested EndNote steps for this assignment:

  • Install EndNote on your laptop or desktop (click on the 'Download EndNote' link)
  • Check if the style you are required to use is listed in dropdown box. Otherwise download this output style from Endnote.com
  • Import the BioScience journal title abbreviations list
  • Create a group for each database you search
  • Export references from the databases
  • Drag the references into the relevant group folder after each database
  • Click on a group folder in the left panel, to bring up just those references
  • Add a label to the references to detail the search used:
    • Go to: Tools > Change/Move/Copy Fields...
    • Change the drop down to In: Label
    • In the empty box, type in:
      - database searched
      - date searched
      - limits of search, such as date range or languages
      - search terms used
    • Click OK
    • The label will go into all of the references and be searchable
  • Change the columns to make the label appear:
    • Go to: Edit > Preferences > Display fields
    • Change column 8 from 'Last updated', to Label
  • Set up ‘Find Full Text’ to bring in PDFs  (read these online instructions)
  • Annotate PDFs with highlighting and sticky notes  (open the PDF and select the icons at the top – click and drag for highlighting; two clicks on the page for a sticky note)
  • You can search sticky notes (read these online instructions)
  • Rate the papers with a star rating (click in the ‘Rating’ column to make stars appear or disappear)
  • Sort by star rating (click on the ‘Rating’ heading to sort by stars)
  • Add comments in the ‘Notes’ field about why a paper was included/excluded
  • Find duplicates by:
    • sorting  -  click on the ‘Title’ heading to sort alphabetically by title
      OR
    • find duplicates feature  -  click on Library> Find Duplicates.  (Just count the duplicates – don’t click ‘keep this record’.  That would delete one of them.)
  • DON’T DELETE RECORDS FROM YOUR LIBRARY! – You need the tallies for your PRISMA flowchart
  • Add a reference to a Word document:
    • click on the desired reference, right click and select Copy formatted; open Word and paste it in
    • OR
    • insert citations into your Word document using the EndNote menu in Word
  • To compress an EndNote library to attach it to an email, or to submit it for assessment, go to:  File > Compressed Library (.enlx)…  [this will combine the .enl folder and .data folder into a zipped, attachable file, called an .enlx file]
