Live Performance of Creative Work - Music

Definition

Musical performance embodying research and undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge and/or advance understanding in the context of the arts and humanities. 

The live performance of new and original works that extends knowledge and/or develops the work of other creative artists and researchers in music and other fields.

The live performance should exhibit originality, extending the boundaries of existing ideas, methodologies, approaches, creative or improvisational techniques. This may include repertoire performed according to new ideas of performance practice.

Works may include:

  • Performance of a new work or new repertoire, such as a world premiere, developed in partnership with the composer
  • Performance of an innovative interpretation or production of an existing work of music
  • Performance of repertoire that incorporates improvisation drawing on extensive research

Evidence type suggestions (at least one required):

  • Digital, audio or video recording, or substantial representation, of the live performance (required if the work is selected for ERA peer review)
  • Performance program
  • Performance instructions
  • Graphic score
  • Images of the performance
  • Peer recognition of the work via:
    • commissioning by a nationally or internationally recognised peer review body, distinguished public or private body
    • awards, short-listing, prizes, honours, etc.
    • substantial public recognition of the work by peers in the field through online or print reviews, including in academic journals, professional publications or established critical blogs.

Live Performance of Creative Work - Dance

Definition

Dance performance embodying research and undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge and/or advance understanding in the context of the arts and humanities. 

The live performance of new and original work that extends and/or develops new knowledge in the performing arts and other fields.

The live performance should exhibit originality, extending the boundaries of existing ideas, methodologies, approaches, or practices. This may include repertoire performed according to new paradigms of performance-based practice in dance and/or other fields of intellectual or artistic endeavour.

Works may include:

  • Performance of a new work or new repertoire, such as a world premiere
  • Performance of repertoire that has been newly discovered, choreographed, or interpreted
  • Performance of an innovative interpretation or production of an existing work of dance

Evidence type suggestions (at least one required):

  • Digital, audio or video recording, or substantial representation, of the live performance (required if the work is selected for ERA peer review)
  • Performance program
  • Performance instructions
  • Images of the performance
  • Peer recognition of the work via:

Live Performance of Creative Work - Plays, Dramas, Theatre

Definition

Theatre or other dramatic performance embodying research and undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge and/or advance understanding in the context of the arts and humanities. 

A live theatrical performance of new and original work that extends knowledge and/or develops the work of other artists and researchers.

The live performance should exhibit originality, extending the boundaries of the art form, by introducing new ideas, methodologies, creative approaches, and/or techniques. This may include repertoire performed according to experimental processes.

Works may include:

  • Performance of a new work for live theatre, such as a world premiere
  • Performance of an innovative interpretation or production of an existing work of theatre
  • New approaches to traditions of dramatic performance

Evidence type suggestions (at least one required):

  • Digital, audio or video recording, or substantial representation, of the live performance (required if the work is selected for ERA peer review)
  • Performance program
  • Performance instructions
  • Images of the performance
  • Peer recognition of the work via:
    • commissioning by a nationally or internationally recognised peer review body, distinguished public or private body

Live Performance of Creative Work - Interarts

Definition

Live performance of original work or a demonstrably new or innovative interpretation/production of an existing work embodying research and undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge and/or advance understanding in fields across the research spectrum, primarily in the creative arts, design, and the humanities. 

The live performance of new and original works that extend and/or develop new knowledge of the performing arts and/or other disciplines.

Experimental live performance and/or interactive work that extends the boundaries of existing ideas, methodologies, approaches, or practices. The work should exhibit originality, which may be in one of the following ways:

  • by using hybrid forms, usually unrelated creative practices or new combinations of performance genres
  • repertoire performed according to new ideas, paradigms and applications both within and outside the performing arts discipline
  • by challenging traditional relationships between artist, audience, social and physical spaces, such as investing the audience with an element of creative agency.

Works may include:

  • Performance of a new work or repertoire, such as a world premiere
  • Performance that includes new applications, arrangements or techniques
  • Performance of an innovative interpretation or production of an existing work or interdisciplinary collaboration of usually not related practices
  • New approaches to existing materials, forms or ideas

Definition

Live performance of original work or a demonstrably new or innovative interpretation/production of an existing work embodying research and undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge and/or advance understanding in fields across the research spectrum, primarily in the creative arts, design, and the humanities.

The live performance of new and original work that extends and/or develops new knowledge in the performing arts and other fields.

The live performance should exhibit originality, extending the boundaries of existing ideas, methodologies, approaches, or practices. This may include repertoire performed according to new paradigms of performance-based practice.

Works may include:

  • Live performance works that do not fit other types in this section
  • Performance of a new work or repertoire, such as a world premiere
  • Performance of an innovative interpretation or production of an existing work
